Project Overview

Preserving a Civic Landmark

Portland City Hall stands as a monumental example of Beaux-Arts civic architecture in New England. Designed by Carrère & Hastings — the firm behind the New York Public Library — and completed in 1912, the building is constructed entirely of granite quarried from North Jay, Maine. Its design was inspired by the French Renaissance Hôtel de Ville tradition, and the structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

The building features a U-shaped plan open to Congress Street, with a commanding 200-foot clock tower rising from the central mass. Portland's fourth city hall, it was built after its predecessor was destroyed by fire in 1908 — continuing the city's tradition of rising from adversity, captured in its motto Resurgam (“I will rise again”).

Cenaxo was selected to repoint the decorative stone elements of Portland City Hall during the summer and fall of 2013. Our skilled craftsmen performed meticulous mortar repointing, stone fabrication, coping stone resetting, brick joint repointing, weather cap installation, and support wall reconstruction across the granite façade.

Project Scope

  • Decorative stone repointing across the granite façade

  • Stone fabrication and resetting of coping stones

  • Brick joint repointing on secondary masonry elements

  • Weather cap joint installation for moisture protection

  • Support wall reconstruction at deteriorated sections

  • Stone replacement of damaged or spalled granite units

  • Mortar color matching for seamless historic appearance

Beaux-Arts Heritage

Portland City Hall is one of the finest Beaux-Arts civic buildings in Maine. Designed by the same firm that created the New York Public Library, its North Jay granite façade, 200-foot clock tower, and decorative stonework required a restoration approach that honored both the materials and the craftsmanship of the original builders.
