Project Overview

Island Lighthouse Rehabilitation

Cenaxo was selected by the Norwalk Seaport Association for the rehabilitation of the Sheffield Island Lighthouse and Keeper's Cottage. The Sheffield Island Lighthouse is a mid-Victorian style lighthouse built in 1868 from stone, wood, and cast iron. Adjacent to the lighthouse is the Keeper's Cottage, built in 1827. The property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The budget was limited, but Cenaxo provided the value needed to make the project a reality. Collaboration was key in working through logistics and scope to accomplish the goals of the client. The property is rich in history, and there is a passionate group of volunteers committed to the preservation of these historic structures.

The work scope required the delicate handling of a diverse blend of materials — wood, masonry, copper, and cast iron. Cenaxo's experienced crew succeeded in executing the highest quality workmanship possible, while respecting the unique history of these very special structures.

Project Scope

  • Masonry pointing and stone restoration

  • Historic wood trim replacement

  • Historic wood window restoration

  • Structural reinforcement of deteriorated areas

  • Cast iron repair and painting

  • Wood painting throughout both structures

  • Roofing and flashing repairs

  • Offshore mobilization via 74-foot landing craft

Offshore Logistics

Sheffield Island is located approximately four miles from Norwalk Harbor in Long Island Sound. Cenaxo's crew commuted daily by commercial support boat, while the major mobilization — trailers, tractors, lifts, and equipment — was accomplished using a 74-foot twin diesel-powered landing craft for safe, practical loading and unloading on the island shore.
